The result: is the sculpture what remains or what is removed? It only exists because something is removed and something is left.
The sculpture exists in the contrast between these opposite aspects and consists of an infinite thin shell. In fact it only exists as a cross between what is, and what is not.
A haiku of emptiness surrounds every sculpture to the extent of the removed matter; if the sculpture consisted of time it would be a now. An old Indian symbol for now, V, is a flying bird that lightly grazes a water surface.
In 1999 I carved a number of sculptures for the biggest labyrinth in the world on the Danish island of Samsø. The elm wood sculptures, carved with chainsaw and chisel, are up to five meters in height.
They are mainly based on characters from Nordic mythology – such as Thor and Odin -- and folktales, like The Little Mermaid.
See some of them at: Samsø Labyrinten.
